Today, my dog Chubby and I got attacked by another dog. A much bigger one, easily 70+ pounds. The 'stray' (assuming as no owner was present) grabbed my dog but instead got his walking harness instead. I pulled back on the lead hard and upwards and scooped Chubby up and did my best to shield him from the other dog. However the dog still tried to rip Chubby from my arms and bit me a few times in the process, luckily my jacket was thick enough to protect me and I was not harmed. His paw swiped my face tho and I have a long scratch from the corner of my mouth, across my cheek and jaw, and down my neck. I had to hold a cold pack to it for a while to stop the intense stinging. Chubby was absolutely fine, just was badly shaken up and had wet spots from the other dogs drool. I got away by kneeing the dog when it jumped and I took off to my aunt's work. A walk that normally takes 25 minutes, I made in 7 minutes. I then called the Humane Society to report it.
Sadly, a lady that lives in my apartment building said her little dog was attacked and killed by a dog of the same description, and she was helpless to do anything. I also informed the humane society about this. There are a lot of dogs in my building, many of them smaller then a cat. I fear for their safety and I hope the stray is found and removed. I also feel for the stray dog, as an animal lover it upset me a bit to report it...as I know what happens to dogs that attack other animals and people. Still, I have to look out for my little buddy and all his friends here at the building.
The stray dog had a gentle leader on its face...so it obviously escaped from someone. Its unfortunate this had to happen for both parties. I wish some people were more responsible with their pets, no notice was ever made of a lost dog in the paper or around town, not even in the regional paper...too bad Cesar Milan could not find this dog!
Dog sense can go a long way.
